black and white series

Black and white — no colour. two opposites that provoke the viewer and evoke new dimensions through lines, forms and rhythm. Polygons and cuboids & not — forms of geometry, equal, monotonous, and fair.

The intermediate grey occurs – sometimes a Cinnabar red, known as Vermilion when used as pigment. The high-contrast association leads the viewer into a deep space. The alleged light and shadow areas alternate in strength. Graduated grey lets thoughts of urbanised canyons, rock formations, or an architectural utopia emerge. Themes are often repeated in modulated, fragmented, or reduced forms.

Earlier periods have been colourful and mixed in emotional backgrounds. Before the B&W phase, there was a clear tendency toward red. Vermilion, also known as “Chinese Red” or Zinnober (Cinnabarit), is somewhat contradictory. On one hand, it is historically significant as a symbol of nobility, life, and luxury. On the other hand, the word Zinnober is used colloquially in German to mean something worthless and pointless.
